We have looked into this concept as one of our previous topic and we are considering the topic again but with a different perspective.
In the real sense, the way we initially viewed it was actually becoming a thing of the past with the trending of technology, there is a need to view it with present and future trend of technology.
Operating system
[Wiktionary, English 2.4] defines operating system as Software that controls the allocation and usage of hardware resources such as memory, CPU time, disk space, and input and output devices.
OS is a software that act as an interface between user, application software and the computer hardware. By the way the name even sound, OS determines the mode of operation of the system implying that it controls, manages other components.
It may be found across different model/type and of different versions.
Eg. Windows (version XP, 7, 8, 8.1, 10) linux, Unix, Apple/mac, blackberry, Android ,Java, window mobile.....)
All these determine the operation of the respective devices they belong to. For example Android app works on Android operating system, but won't work on windows OS.
PC software
Software for personal computer (laptop & desktop)
Mobile apps
The application found on mobile phones (Android phones & tablets, windows phones, iPhone, Java phones, Symbian phones, blackberry...)
Emulators
I've previously said it that Android apps can only work on Android OS but won't work on windows OS meaning that a particular software (app) is for specific OS.
But with the aid of EMULATOR, it is now possible for the impossibility to happen. A typical examples is using a standalone whatsapp application which was intended for Android devices/OS, but could be used on a PC with Windows OS, emulator like BLUESTACK which is an example of Android emulator for windows OS. Another example is kEmulator (a Java emulator for windows OS).
Local or offline packages
The local or offline packages doesn't feature or require internet data connection for running, they have their database or storage section within the system or outside (online).
Eg. Some aspect of coreldraw, Photoshop, MS word and most software.
Cloud or online packages
Cloud packages require the use of internet connection to access them because their base of storage & processing is online.
Eg. Those aspect of software or app that requires internet connection like coreldraw, Photoshop, MS office, whatsapp, facebook & other online platform.
In this sense, the world has gone beyond seeing what software was solely known for, but platform like google services, facebook services, Twitter, Windows.... & all the major & minor technological incorporation mostly runs on cloud services. This is the reason while at LC ConQuesTECH, we submitted that SOFTWARE IS ANY COMPUTER PACKAGES (PC, MOBILE, OFFLINE, CLOUD, OR HYBRIDIZED) TO PERFORM ANY TASK IN ANY WALKS OF LIFE.
